Raats Original Chenin Blanc 750ml 2023 is a vibrant, unoaked white wine from Raats Family Wines, a respected, family-led estate based in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, South Africa that has built its reputation on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc since its founding in 2000 by winemaker Bruwer Raats. The winery focuses on terroir-driven wines that express the distinctive decomposed dolomite granite soils and the moderating influence of the nearby ocean, producing fresh, mineral-rich wines with clarity and balance. Made from 100 % Chenin Blanc grapes hand-harvested and fermented separately from parcels on granite and sandstone soils, the juice was cold settled, fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures, and aged on its lees for about six months before bottling without oak. This approach preserves pure fruit character and vibrant acidity while letting the influence of site shine through. In the glass the 2023 vintage shows enticing aromas and flavours of yellow apple, kiwi, pineapple, green melon and lime, with a zesty citrus edge and a long mineral-driven finish that underscores its crisp, refreshing profile. The absence of oak keeps its fruit and mineral intensity front and centre, making it incredibly versatile and food-friendly. This Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with fresh seafood and shellfish, sushi, mild curries and oysters, and its clean, refreshing acidity also makes it a lovely apéritif on its own.
