Newton Johnson Full Stop Rock Syrah Blend‑2019 is a confident, Rhône‑inspired red from Newton Johnson Family Vineyards, a highly regarded estate in the Upper Hemel‑en‑Aarde Valley of South Africa’s Cape South Coast that’s best known for expressive cool‑climate wines grown near the Atlantic. The Newton Johnson family began making wine in the mid‑1990s and today farms mostly cool‑site Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also excels with Mediterranean‑style reds on its rugged, stone‑strewn granite soils where grenache, syrah and mourvèdre vines thrive. The 2019 Full Stop Rock is a Syrah‑dominated blend (with Grenache and Mourvèdre) named for the jagged, rocky terrain of the lower slopes of the estate, where vines must search deep for nutrients—contributing both intensity and freshness to the fruit. In the glass it delivers brooding black and red fruit with concentrated notes of mulberry, juicy blackberries and liquorice, framed by hints of black and white pepper and floral spice from the Grenache component. The palate is rich and generous yet balanced by cool‑climate freshness, with chewy tannins and a lingering finish that makes it both satisfying to drink now and suitable for short‑term ageing. This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, game, hearty stews or braai/barbecue fare, and its savoury spice and structure stand up well to bold flavours and rich sauces. Why we love this wine? We love the layered complexity of fruit, spice and terroir, the perfect wine for a thought provoking campfire.
