Kaapzicht Kliprug Chenin Blanc-2023

$ 23.62

Kaapzicht Kliprug Chenin Blanc 2023 is a structured, terroir-driven white wine from Kaapzicht Wine Estate, a family-owned winery in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, South Africa, where rocky, iron-rich granite soils and dry-farmed bush vines help produce concentrated, expressive Chenin Blanc. The “Kliprug” (Afrikaans for “rocky ridge”) block was planted in 1982, and these old, low-yielding vines impart extra depth, texture and balance to the wine. In the vineyard the grapes are hand-harvested from unirrigated old bush vines on weathered granite and crumbly clay sub-soils, then gently crushed and destemmed with skin contact in the press to build texture. After natural sedimentation the juice is racked to large oak barrels for spontaneous fermentation, which can last a few weeks, and then the wine is aged in barrel for about 10 months before bottling, giving richness and complexity. The 2023 shows a rich, deep and complex nose of bruised yellow fruits, white peach and honeyed pineapple, with creamy, lees-driven notes and plenty of focus and textural weight. On the palate it’s medium- to full-bodied yet balanced, with ripe stone fruit and gentle spice framed by lively acidity and a plush, layered finish. This Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roast poultry, creamy pasta or dishes with citrus and herbs, and its texture also makes it a great match for richer cheeses. With good structure and age-worthy balance it can hold well for 3–5 years from vintage. Why we love this wine? We love the weight on this wine, afternoon sunshine in a glass!
