The Wrekin Needle’s Eye Pinot Noir 2016 is an elegant, age‑worthy expression of 100 % Pinot Noir from The Wrekin Needle’s Eye Pinot Noir 2016, a limited‑release single‑vineyard wine from The Wrekin Vineyard in the Southern Valleys of Marlborough, New Zealand. The Wrekin is a family‑run, certified organic estate where hand‑harvested fruit from clay and loess soils is vinified with a light touch, aiming to reflect both site and the classic Pinot Noir varietal character. Warm, dry and consistent conditions in the 2016 growing season produced evenly ripened fruit that was hand‑picked over about three weeks and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, with a small percentage of whole bunches included and extended skin contact for depth. The wine was matured in French oak, offering complexity without overpowering oak influence. On the nose the 2016 Needle’s Eye shows dried strawberries and crimson plums, evolving into spice, cedar wood and savoury notes as it opens. The palate is velvety and integrated, with fine‑grained tannins, firm acidity and plenty of depth and complexity from both fruit and age. It’s expressive yet refined, with a long, savoury finish and the structure to continue evolving in bottle. This is a beautifully developed Marlborough Pinot with tertiary dimensions that pair especially well with roasted duck, lamb, mushroom‑based dishes or slow‑braised game, and benefits from decanting to showcase its layered profile. Why we love this wine? We love the cedar spice and rich red fruit elegance. “Attractive, juicy fruit with finesse and focus on the nose and palate. Strawberries and flowers. Medium body, crisp acidity and a delicious finish. Drink now.” – JAMES SUCKLING · 93
