Thelema The Abbey 2021 is a rich, Rhône‑style red blend from Thelema Mountain Vineyards, a highly respected family‑owned winery perched on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, South Africa where cool breezes, decomposed granite soils and elevation contribute both intensity and structural balance to its wines. Thelema was established in the early 1980s by Gyles Webb and remains one of the Cape’s most admired estates, known for premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and expressive red blends that reflect classic winemaking with a distinctly South African character. The 2021 The Abbey is a thoughtfully composed blend of Shiraz (~72 %), Grenache (~14 %) and Petit Verdot (~14 %) that spent about 18 months maturing in second‑ and third‑fill French oak barrels after fermentation. On the nose it offers dark plum and black fruit aromas with white pepper spice and inviting toasted nuance, while the palate shows generous ripe fruit framed by elegant acidity, fine tannins and savoury spice complexity. This is a versatile, food‑friendly red with enough structure and depth to pair beautifully with hearty stews, roasted or grilled red meats and rich braised dishes, and it also rewards short‑to‑medium term cellaring. Why we love this wine? We love the oomph of the Petit Verdot in this wine!
